Why I want to visit (and revisit!) Las Vegas, Miami and New York

This is where I admit something surprising.

Despite visiting over 70 countries around the world (I’ve lost count of the number of cities!), I’ve never been to New York. I know, I know.

Funnily enough, I’ve been to the state of New York, but never to the city. Whenever I tell people that they’re always like “Really!? But everyone’s been to New York!!!” Yeah, well, I haven’t.

Anyway, someone asked me recently what I’d do in New York on a city break if I went, and it got me thinking. What would I do there and why haven’t I been? And then I realised, of all of America’s biggest and most popular cities – LA, Las Vegas, Miami – I haven’t really been to anyone of them for any length of time – I’m hoping that’s something I can rectify soon!

So, here are my top 3 city breaks in the USA!

Las Vegas

Okay, so I have actually been to Las Vegas before, but being a 13-year-old I have a feeling I’d do things differently now and not just stay in the arcades all day.

The one thing I do remember was wanting to ride to rollercoaster at the hotel New York, New York but being too frightened to do so! I’ve always felt like I’ve had unfinished business with that rollercoaster (maybe I haven’t grown up all that much), but I’d love to go back and tackle that ride.

Obviously the major pull of Las Vegas is the hedonism. I’ve had a fair few friends who’ve been to Sin City on a stag do, and I have to admit there’s some pull to do that. The Hangover anyone?

Top 3 things I want to do in Las Vegas:

  1. Ride the rollercoaster at New York, New York
  2. Watch a Cirque du Soleil performance at Circus Circus
  3. Pull an all-nighter and hopefully win some $$$ in the casinos

Miami

My experience of Miami is even more pathetic than Las Vegas. With an hour to spare before flying back to the UK, I drove along South Beach but I didn’t stop, didn’t see the beach, didn’t do anything, so I can hardly say I’ve been to Miami either.

If I went back though, those are the things that I’d love to do. Even on that drive it was great seeing how showy the place was, everyone looking to out-do one another. I’m not saying that I’d be like that! I’d just quite like to see that for myself!

I always feel Miami is one of those cities that you’ve just got to immerse yourself in, that you’ve just got to experience. I know everyone hangs out at South Beach but there’s a bustling modern art scene in Miami too, and then there’s those famous Cuban sandwiches and the food trucks…

Top 3 things I want to do in Miami:

  1. Have cocktails down by South Beach and watch the world go by
  2. Take a Sea Plane Tour for the best views along the coastline
  3. Wander around all the galleries in the design district

New York

Now New York is a city I’m just dying to visit. New York seems to be a city held in the same higher echelons of social status as London (my favourite city in the world!) In short, it’s a place that everyone loves!

From Brooklyn Bridge to the Empire State Building to the Statue of Liberty, there are so many iconic images of New York, and I’d love to explore the city.

Also, from a photography perspective I can just imagine standing at a busy intersection seeing the hustle and bustle of the city before more. And those skyscrapers too!

There are some amazing photographers who I follow such as Jason Peterson and J.N Silva who live in New York, and I love how they use the cityscape as inspiration for their work. I’d love to do something similar to that.

Top 3 things I want to do in New York:

  1. Grab a coffee and walk around Central Park
  2. Catch the Staten Island Ferry and take in the views
  3. Hit the bars and West Village and watch some American sport

New York, USA

I was lucky enough to explore a lot more of the USA last year and yet I didn’t still didn’t visit Las Vegas, Miami or New York!

I hear there are some amazing events going on over in Las Vegas this year so I’m hoping to go over for one of those! As for New York though, that one will still have to wait!

So tell me, are all the rumours true about these cities? Which ones have you been to and what would you recommend in each one? Let me know in the comment box below as I’d love to hear your thoughts on this one!
