I knew I’d love the tacos, I knew I’d probably have a few too many margaritas, but what I didn’t expect was just how much I’d fall for the city itself. There’s this raw, vibrant energy to El Paso that you just don’t get in other US cities. It’s that Tex-Mex soul, a unique blend of cultures where every street, every bar, every meal tells a story. Honestly guys, the vibe here is unlike any other place in the US.
Basing myself downtown, I stayed at The Plaza Hotel and Hotel Paso Del Norte, two of the most iconic hotels in the city. From their rooftop views to their stunning architecture, both places made my trip feel that little bit more special.
If you’re heading to El Paso, whether it’s for the food, the hiking, or the culture, I genuinely can’t recommend these two hotels enough. They’re destinations in their own right – and the perfect base for exploring everything this incredible city has to offer.

Where to stay in El Paso
Before diving into the best hotels, it’s worth getting your bearings. With a population of 700,000, El Paso is a fairly spread-out city, but it’s easy to navigate once you know the neighbourhoods. Here are a few key areas to consider when choosing where to stay.
Downtown El Paso: If it’s your first time in the city, downtown is the place to be. This is where you’ll find the historic heart of El Paso, packed with street art, museums, buzzing bars and some of the best restaurants in the city. It’s also home to two of El Paso’s most iconic hotels, so it’s perfect if you want everything right on your doorstep.
East El Paso: East El Paso is more residential, but it’s a good option if you’re looking for budget-friendly hotels or a quieter base. It’s also where you’ll find big shopping centres, chain restaurants, and more suburban-style comforts.
West El Paso & Upper Valley: If you’re planning on hiking at Franklin Mountains State Park or heading out to places like Scenic Drive or Keystone Heritage Park, then staying in West El Paso or the Upper Valley makes sense. It’s leafy, peaceful and has some beautiful views across the Rio Grande.
Airport Area: For convenience, the area around El Paso International Airport is a solid choice. There are plenty of mid-range hotels with free airport shuttles, and it’s only about 15 minutes from downtown by car. Handy if you’re flying in late or heading out early.
Sunland Park: Just over the border from New Mexico, Sunland Park is technically a separate city but still feels like part of the El Paso metro area. It’s close to the racetrack and casino, and has quick access to the west side of town. Good if you’re looking for something a little different.

The Plaza Hotel is easily one of the most stylish places to stay in El Paso. Housed in a beautifully restored 1930s Art Deco building, this place blends vintage elegance with modern luxury in all the right ways. The rooms are sleek and sophisticated, the lobby is straight out of a Wes Anderson film, and the rooftop bar – La Perla – is the perfect spot for sunset cocktails overlooking the city and into Mexico. There’s also a swanky Mexican restaurant on-site, Ámbar, with open-fire cooking and mezcal flights. It’s effortlessly cool.
Stanton House
This place is seriously cool. Stanton House is a boutique hotel that leans hard into modern art, creative design and upscale vibes. Think minimalist rooms with huge windows, walk-in showers and some pretty quirky artwork thrown in for good measure. The location downtown is ideal for walking to bars and restaurants, and there’s even an in-house spa if you’re in the mood to treat yourself. Don’t miss the rooftop terrace for city views and cocktails. It feels like a contemporary art gallery meets luxury hideaway – definitely one of the most unique places to stay in El Paso.

Rooms are plush and comfortable, and the Dome Bar is a must for a cocktail under the coloured glass ceiling. It’s refined without being stuffy, and you’ll feel like a total VIP staying here.

Courtyard By Marriott, El Paso Downtown
If you’re looking for a reliable and modern base downtown without breaking the bank, this Courtyard by Marriott is a top pick. It’s just a short stroll from San Jacinto Plaza and has all the amenities you’d expect – big comfy beds, a rooftop pool with skyline views, and super friendly staff. Rooms are bright and clean with a business-traveller-meets-city-break kind of feel. You’re close to bars, restaurants and the convention centre too, which makes it a convenient choice whether you’re here for work or play.
Hyatt Place, El Paso Airport
Located just a few minutes from the airport, Hyatt Place is a great mid-range option for anyone needing easy travel access. Rooms are spacious and modern with separate seating areas and big windows that let in loads of light. There’s a small pool, gym, and a free airport shuttle which is always a bonus. Breakfast is included too, and there’s a 24/7 snack bar if you get the late-night munchies. It’s a solid, stress-free option for stopovers or early flights.
Embassy Suites by Hilton El Paso
This all-suite hotel offers that little bit of extra space, perfect if you’re staying a few nights or travelling with kids. Each room comes with a separate living area, mini fridge and microwave – ideal for feeling at home. There’s also a great indoor pool, complimentary evening drinks and snacks, and a cooked-to-order breakfast every morning (yes, they’ll make you pancakes). Located just off I-10, it’s a short drive to downtown, the airport, or nearby malls. A great all-rounder with a lot of value.

Ramada by Wyndham El Paso
This Ramada is a solid budget-friendly option in East El Paso. The rooms are a little dated, but they’re spacious, clean, and come with kitchenettes – which is great if you’re staying a few days. There’s a small pool and free breakfast included, and it’s close to plenty of casual dining spots and shops. It’s a quiet area too, so you’ll get a good night’s sleep without the downtown noise.
The Hotel at Sunland Park Casino
Want to stay somewhere a bit different? This hotel is attached to a casino and racetrack just across the border in Sunland Park.
