I would describe myself as a boy’s boy. I grew up playing athletics, cricket, football, rugby. Basically, any type of sport I could get involved in, I would.

Even though I don’t play as much as I used to, I am still completely obsessed with all sports. The first thing I do each morning is check the sports news, and whenever there’s a game of anything on TV, even if it’s something like indoor bowls, I can’t help watching it.

I know I’m describing the typical bloke here, so I thought it’d be fun coming up with some easy sports quiz questions and answers to test you with. These are the type of sports questions you should know off the top of your head without having to look up the answers. That’s the hope anyway!

1. What sport is described as “the beautiful game?” Everyone considers football (soccer to you Americans) to be the beautiful game. When it’s played like Spain’s titi-taka style that won them two European Championships and one World Cup in a row, it’s easy to understand why.

2. Which country won the first ever football world cup? The first ever football world cup was held in 1930 in Uruguay in South America. They went on to win it beating Argentina 4-2 in the final, so Uruguay were the first ever winners.

3. How many regulation strokes are there in swimming? Four. Backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle

4. How long is the total distance of a marathon? That’s 26.2 miles, or 42.16 kilometres. Basically, a very very long way! You can find out more about the history of the marathon here.

5. How many gold medals has Usain Bolt won? Usain Bolt has won 8 gold medals making him the most successful sprinter ever. He had one gold medal stripped after Nesta Carter tested positive for a banned substance in the 100 metres relay at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

6. What is his world record time for the 100 metres? Bolt’s world record time is a rapid 9.58 seconds! I wonder if it’ll ever be beaten? This is one of those sports questions and answers that always crops up in the local pub quiz, so it’s a good one to know.

7. What five colours make up the Olympic rings? Blue, black, green, red and yellow.

8. What has Muhammad Ali’s original name? It was Cassius Clay. He was known as Muhammad Ali after he converted to Islam in 1961.

9. What is the only sport to be played on the moon? Golf! Alan Bartlett Shepard, a NASA astronaut, famously snuck a golf club onto Apollo 14 and played golf on the moon.

10. How many NBA championships did Michael Jordan win with the Chicago Bulls? 6. The Chicago Bulls during the 1990s are considered to be one of the best sports teams ever in any sports.

11. Who has won more tennis grand slam titles – Venus Williams or Serena Williams? Serena has! She has won a whopping 23 grand slams, whereas Venus has won only 7.

12. Which country won the first ever rugby world cup? New Zealand won the inaugural rugby world cup in 1987. They’ve gone on to win the cup on two other occasions – in 2011 and 2015.

13. In which sport would competitors use a piece of equipment known as a foil? Fencing.

14. In which sport do teams compete to win the Stanley Cup? Men’s ice hockey.

22. What is Canada’s national sport? How many of you said ice hockey for this one? It’s actually lacrosse which even surprised me! Bit of a trick question there!

23. In football, which team has won the Champions League (formerly the European Cup) the most? Real Madrid have won the Champions League 13 times.

24. Which Formula 1 driver has won the most races in the history of the sport? Lewis Hamilton recently surpassed Michael Schumacher’s record with 100 race wins in his career.

26. How many players are there in a rugby league team? Different to rugby union which has 15 players per team, there are only 13 players in rugby league. This is a sports trivia question I expect Americans to struggle with!

27. What two teams play in “El Clasico”? That’s one of the world’s biggest football rivalries between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

28. Won who the last cricket world cup? England did in their nail-biting super over win over New Zealand in 2019.

29. What is the name Tyson Fury calls himself? He’s known as the Gypsy King.

30. Which country did F1 legend Ayrton Senna come from? Brazil, a place where he is still revered today.
